Abstract:
Background: The potential of postmortem imaging by means of MSCT and MRI is to gain subsidiary information to autopsy in forensic traumatology. In some cases postmortem imaging may become an alternative to autopsy with regard to anatomical regions that are difficult to access or not examined due to autopsy-protocols. MSCT and MRI are non-invasive methods of imaging, hence they do not influence further forensic diagnostics as well as autopsies. Material and Methods: The comparison of imaging by means of MSCT and MRI is based on systematic literature research. The focus of this paper is on postmortem forensic findings in adult trauma victims. In addition, the differences regarding the specifics of MSCT and MRI are analysed. Results: By means of postmortem MSCT and MRI imaging information about cicumstances of injury and death can be gained quickly. The digital and objective images facilitate observer-independent documentation. Long-time archivation of data allows reinterpretation of relevant forensic findings in MSCT and MRI images anytime. The possibility of 2D- and 3D-reconstruction of MSCT- and MRI-images helps to evaluate complex injury, the reconstruction of the course of accident and the presentation of forensic findings to laymen, eg. in court. Conclusion: Postmortem MSCT and MRI are complementary imaging methods. They enrich forensic diagnostics in trauma victims considerably. Furthermore digital MSCT and MRI imaging is a great chance for a telemedical approach in treating complex forensic cases. Thus, postmortem MSCT and MRI has the potential of shaping the future of forensic sciences.
