- Abstract:
- The dry eye or keratoconjunctivitis sicca is one of the most common eye diseases worldwide, especially in the Western industrialized world, the number of the affected persons has increased in the last few years.
More and more people in those countries need to see for the ophthalmologist because of ocular dryness, increased tears, burning, pain, itching and foreign body sensation in the eye.
The keratoconjunctivitis sicca is an ocular surface disease, which has a lot of different causes. Responsible for the emergence of the dry eye are immunological or inflammatory disorders such as Sjogren's syndrome or blepharitis. There are several exogenous factors that can cause keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
The pathogenesis of dry eye is only partially resolved. There are numerous methods available for diagnosis and classification of keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
The therapy of sicca syndrome is still a challenge, because the possible treatments of keratoconjunctivitis sicca today are limited to purely symptomatic therapies.
