Abstract:
Patients with head and neck cancer do often suffer under functional troubles like problems with the articulation, the breathing or the intake of food. Beside the physical impairment the emotional, the social and the cognitive condition is also affected. All this does affect the quality of life, which is a multidimensional construct made out of this conditions. The Eortc QLQ-C30 questionnaire and its disease specific module, the Eortc QLQ-H&N35 are reliable and validated instruments for measuring the multidimensional quality of life in head and neck cancer patients. Aim of this thesis is to analyze the health related quality of life in a defined patient population based on the Eortc QLQ-C30 and the Eortc H&N-35 questionnaire. It is also attempted to compare the health related quality of life of the defined population with the health related quality of life in the general population and also to compare differences between the sexes. The defined population included 42 persons from which 32 persons (76 %) were male and 10 persons (24 %) were female. All patients had a carcinoma of the upper digestive tract which was first diagnosed within the year 2008. The outcome of the analysis of the Eortc QLQ-C30 and the Eortc H&N35 questionnaire was that the defined population estimated their health related quality of life in high standards. Although the patients of this study estimated their health related quality of life in high standards, the quality of life in the defined population compared to the quality of life in the general population was significantly worse in almost all categories. Between the sexes there were, except of one category (diarrhea), no differences.
