- Abstract:
- The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the results of intraosseous lipomas operated at the department of orthopaedic surgery, University of Graz. Additionally we made a review of the medical literature dealing with this issue.
The World health Organization defines intraosseous lipoma as a benign tumor of mature adipose tissue with no evidence of cellular atypia. Lipomas are one of the most common being tumors of the soft tissue and predominantly they are located subcutaneously. But they can also be found intramuscularly, retroperitoneally, interosseously and intraosseously. In the literature the incidence of the tumor ranges from 0,1% to 2,5% of all bone tumors.
The etiology of intraosseous lipoma is unknown but most authors believe intraosseous lipoma represents a true benign neoplasm. Although the tumor shows a wide age distribution the average age of the reported cases is approximately 41 years. According to the gender there is a slight male preponderance (59% male and 41% female patients). About 25% of the patients with this tumor had no symptoms and the lesion was found incidental. The recommend treatment is surgically, by curettage and filling the defect with bone graft of bone substitutes. Recurrence of the intraosseous lipoma is very rare and was found only in two patients.
In conclusion we think that the intraosseous lipoma is a benign tumor and if the patient presents symptoms therapy should be surgically.
