- Abstract:
- Background: Placental exosomes released to the maternal side of the placenta (pEXsM) are involved in the materno-fetal communication during pregnancy. Depending on their composition, they can cause a variety of functional changes in their target cells, thus inducing adaptions in physiological and pathophysiological pregnancies (preeclampsia, gestational diabetes etc.). The placenta, however, also releases pEXs to the fetal side of the placenta (pEXsF), which could potentially have similar functions as pEXsM, but are largely unexplored until now. Hence, the objective of this thesis is to provide new insights into the characteristics of pEXsF.
