- Abstract:
- Background: Achalasia is a rare primary motility disorder of the esophagus, characterized by impaired relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and the absence of peristalsis in the smooth muscle. The likely main cause is the loss of inhibitory nerve cells. However, the exact pathophysiological mechanism remains unknown. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the treatment outcomes of patients who presented at the Esophagus Specialty Outpatient Clinic of the University Hospital Graz between January 2012 and February 2023, and to compare these with the latest treatment recommendations.
