- Abstract:
- Background. It is now known that most serous ovarian cancers arise in the fallopian tubes, mostly in the fimbriae. These precancerous lesions are called serous tubal intraepithelial carcinomas (STICs). Salpingectomy is associated with a significantly reduced risk for developing serous ovarian carcinoma. Prophylactic removal of the fallopian tubes as part of appropriate gynecological surgery is established and has been recommended by the Austrian Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (OEGGG) since 2015. There is a considerable reason to explore prophylactic salpingectomy at the time of non-gynecological surgery.
