Abstract:
Background and Research Aim: Patients with paediatric inflammatory bowel diseases (PIBDs) are more susceptible to infections due to gastrointestinal dysbiosis, intestinal barrier dysfunction, and the need for (intensive) immunosuppressive therapy (IST), often necessitated by the disease’s extent and severity. IST particularly increases the risk of opportunistic infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of bacterial gastrointestinal (GI) infections in PIBD patients at the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine of the Medical University of Graz, and evaluate outcome and management, particularly in terms of infection management with antibiotics and handling of immunosuppression during bacterial GI infections, aiming to contribute to the limited data and guidelines available on this topic.
