- Abstract:
- Introduction: Infantile Hemangiomas (IH) are the most common benign tumors of
infancy affecting up to 10% of all infants. Most lesions follow an uncomplicated clinical
course, but in about 12% of cases, complications are observed in particular,
scalp IH have been reported to cause alopecia. The treatment of IH was revolutionized
in 2009 by the evidence of the efficacy of oral propranolol. This study aims to
investigate the change in treatment modality of scalp IH over the past 20 years and
to evaluate the clinical outcome in terms of alopecia and scaring.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical charts of 105 patients with scalp
IH treated from 2000 to 2020 at the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery
at the University Hospital of Graz. The cohort was split into three subgroups depending
on the period of treatment in relation to the implementation of oral propranolol
for treatment of IH in 2009: Group 1 (2000-2009), Group 2 (2010-2014) and
Group 3 (2015-2020).
