- Abstract:
- After the discovery of lysergic acid diethylamid (LSD) and the isolation of psychoactive substance psilocybin from mushrooms, hallucinogens became famous for recreational use in the 1960s. About the same time, researchers investigated the effects of hallucinogens in the treatment of mental disorders. After these substances were illegalised, research came to a halt for several decades. Now there exist a number of modern studies that investigated the use of LSD and psilocybin in a psychotherapeutic framework in the treatment of anxiety and depression associated with cancer or lifethreatening diseases. The aim of this thesis is to summarise the results of these studies and to present information on the effects of LSD and psilocybin in psychotherapy. To obtain the data, medical online databases were screened for clinical trials. The studies that met criteria for this thesis included 104 individuals. The results show that LSDand psilocybin- assisted psychotherapy can have positive effects and can lead to a better quality of life in this patient group. However, there is still more research needed in the future to assure these findings.
