Abstract:

The neonatal insulin level and its influence on blood glucose is an important parameter for physicians, nurses and other clinical staff to assess the neonates’ metabolic functions and to diagnose and treat possible adverse outcomes like hypoglycemia and brain damage. There is a lot of knowledge about factors modifying the neonatal insulin, c-peptide, proinsulin and split proinsulin levels but yet there is a lot research to be done. This thesis summarizes the current state of knowledge about different circumstances and diseases, parental as well as fetal and neonatal, influencing the neonatal insulin concentrations, focusing on an elevation of insulin measured in the umbilical cord blood.
