Abstract:
Introduction: Breast reduction surgery is common operation in plastic surgery especially in the western world. Reasons for breast reduction surgery are on the one hand aesthetic reasons, on the other hand the majority of patients suffer from problems of the musculo-skeletal system. Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in the female population. Statistically every 8th women will have some kind of malignant or premalignant event with origin from their breast tissue. Our study evaluated the unexpected occurrence of premalignant or malignant neoplasia in relation to breast reduction surgery. Material and Methods: Women, having undergone breast reduction surgery in the time period between 01/01/00 and 12/31/10 in our hospital were included. A retrospective study design was chosen and the statistical analysis was done with Wilcoxons rank-sum test for continuous variables and Fishers exact test for categorical variables. We surveyed the age, weight and height of the patients, as well as history of breast cancer either form the patients side or in their family history. We also wanted to know about preoperative imaging and the follow up of the patients. Results: We found a total six pathologic premalignant or malignant events. From a total of 688 included patients this sums up to 0.9% of the patient collective. Conclusio: Our results were in the expected range of the literature. Our study shows that more preoperative imaging does not make sense, neither in economic point of view nor concerning patients wellbeing.
