- During the pregnancy, the women’s body undergoes in many physical changes which are
necessary to help fetal development and be prepared for delivery. Morphological and
functional adaption of maternal cardiovascular system is part of these changes. This
Diploma work explores the physiological basis of cardiovascular regulation with the
primary question how cardiovascular system is affected by pre-eclampsia. The past and
current literature from Pubmed, Web of Since database were researched and furthermore
this work focuses on the current knowledge regarding blood pressure regulation, what
happens to the cardiovascular system in normal pregnancy as well as effects of pre-eclampsia
on the cardiovascular system. As pre-eclampsia can be life threatening, the
pharmacological options that are presently available for pre-eclampsia, are outlined and
discussed.
This work has application in the areas of antenatal care and future medical practitioners
who have interest in working in the area of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
