- Background. The constantly increasing number of highly differentiated services offered by individual hospitals can result in a shortage of beds and care. As a consequence better qualified interhospital transport is required. The present study investigated retrospectively the efficacy of a concept developed in Graz to conduct such transport based on intensive care criteria. Material and Methods. The interhospital transfer model of Graz is based on three transport levels. The medical coordinator assigns the transport to the respective level depending on the medical needs of the patient. To evaluate the efficacy of the level system, 10 medical interventions, which had been predefined were compared and rated depending on how often they were the reason for transportation. The assumption was that a higher number of interventions would indicate a higher transport level. Results. A total of 1,086 transfers in an observation time of 2 years were analysed. The number of routine and scheduled interventions correlated highly significantly with the prior assigned transport level. Conclusion. Considering certain requirements the transport level system is effective. Material and personnel resources can be scheduled effectively. Overqualification and underqualification of accompanying staff can be avoided.
