- Abstract:
- The hit list of the most frequent allergens is stable, with nickel at the top for many years, followed by fragrances, biocides and other contact allergens from occupational settings and cosmetics. This stable hitlist is opposed by the contact allergen of the year, a title that is awarded to a contact allergen every year since 2000 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society. Frequent allergens were honoured such as nickel and fragrances as well as rare ones like thioureas and corticocosteroids and even the precious but inert metal gold and the non-allergen thimerosal. No specific criteria are discernible. The annual winner pushes publicity, a fact that is not only important for the substance itself but also for the field of contact dermatitis as such.
