- Background. Like other European countries, Austria operates a physician-staffed prehospital emergency medical care system from different disciplines. The only mandatory uniform training is a 60-hour theoretical course. The present study evaluates the frequency of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions depending on the physician's discipline in the prehospital treatment of severe trauma. Methods. Over an observation period of 11 years all severe trauma patients(NACA-Score > 3) were included. The frequency of the utilization of diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures as well as the prehospital time was recorded and evaluated depending on the respective discipline. Results. 1021 patients were included in the study. There was no difference in the prehospital treatment time. Anesthesiologists showed a significantly higher frequency in most of the interventions. Conclusion. Anesthesiologists seem to perform techniques of advanced prehospital care more readily without prolonged length of stay.
