- Abstract:
- There is ample evidence that genetic factors play a major role in the pathogenesis of glaucomas and essentially influence susceptibility. In addition to providing new insights in the pathophysiology of glaucomas, the identification of genetic factors also provides the opportunity to develop novel therapeutic approaches. Regarding glaucomas with Mendelian inheritance many associated genes have been reported. The identification of genetic factors in the more frequent glaucomas with a complex inheritance pattern is more difficult, but first successes have been achieved using modern moleculargenetic methods.
