Abstract:
Renal anemia is a significant complication in children with chronic kidney disease and can be involved in accelerating the further decline in renal function. The main cause is the inappropriately low production of endogenous erythropoietin. In many cases, absolute or functional iron deficiency is also present in these patients and should be detected during the examination at first presentation. Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents are effective and safe in treating renal anemia in all age groups. The other most important step is consistent iron supplementation. An inadequate response to therapy must be investigated at once. Early and effective treatment of renal anemia can improve health-related quality of life, delay the need for dialysis, and reduce morbidity and mortality.
