Abstract:
EC-law will force the establishment of a ''specialist for allergy and clinical immunology'', who could then be responsible for all aspects of the field concerning patient care, teaching and research. This would mean the loss of their working area for many specialists from the different branches of medicine, that currently care for allergic patients; in Central Europe this is mostly the dermatologist who diagnoses and treats not only skin allergies but plainly represents the allergist. But the frequency of allergic diseases in the general population, the special knowledge that is essential and the specific requirements for the care of allergic patients let the allergy specialist seem indispensable. Not only for the above-mentioned tasks but also as the communicational organ with the legislative, the industry, the patients and the organ-specific specialists. For the latter there would still remain a niche, that remains to be adequately vested.
