- Abstract:
- 3726 patient (2294 females, 1432 males) in 15 clinics were patch tested with the preservative Euxyl(R) K 400 (1,2-dibrom-2,4-dicyanbutane and phenoxyethanol) from June 1989 to May 1990. The reactivity was low: Irritant (non-specific) reactions to dibromdicyanbutane (BCB) were seen in 12 (0.3%) cases, to Euxyl K 400 in six (0.16 %) and to phenoxyethanol in nine cases (0.24 %). Positive (allergic) reactions to Euxyl K 400 were determined in 36 (1.0 %), to dibromdicyanbutane in 30 (0.8 %), and to phenoxyethanol in one patient. In 17 cases (0.5 %), a current or past clinical relevance to these test results was established. Eight patients were masseurs/masseuses or of similar professions. The sensitization rate to Euxyl K 400 and especially to dibromdicyanbutane appears low at present. Euxyl K 400 is used increasingly instead of isothiazolinones in cosmetics. If the presently low risk of contact allergic reactions will change under these conditions is to be awaited.
