- Abstract:
- Constipation is defined as a delay or difficulty in defecation that is present for 2 or more weeks. When these problems are present for more than 8 weeks, the constipation is considered chronic. Whereas constipation is a functional problem in more than 90% of children older than 1 year of age, in infants a variety of organic problems may cause it, with sometimes serious sequelae. A precise history and the knowledge of relevant clinical warning signs are essential for differentiating between a mere functional constipation and constipation on organic grounds. Functional constipation is usually based on a vicious cycle of stool retention-painful defecation-pain. Therefore, effective stool disimpaction is initially most important (by giving polyethylene glycol orally), followed by long-lasting efforts to maintain soft stools (dietary modification). A combined approach including behaviour management may also be tried over a shorter period of time.
