Abstract:
There are various dangers inherent in sport, especially competitive athletics and especially during childhood and adolescence. Physical and mental development, growth, immune resistance and fertility can all be impaired if the energy supply is inadequate. The female athlete triad (eating disorder, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis) may be observed in girls. In boys stunting of growth is more frequently seen; they often do not achieve the heights that are normal among other members of their families. Anorexia athletica, with thinness often deliberately achieved in order to improve athletic performance, can be the beginning of a life-long and menacing eating disorder. Its prevention is difficult, and only cooperation from all affected can help at all. The fashion for slimness and the craze for sport with the Olympic motto of "citius, altius fortius" (faster, higher, stronger) can lead to a desire for victory with no regard for the athletes' health.
