Abstract:
12 Air-force pilot trainees underwent a series of physical and psychical stresses with recreation periods in between of a total duration of 150 minutes. Blood samples were taken from a cannula at 6 appropriate times. The very same regimen was imposed upon them on another day. It began 30 minutes after they had absolved their very first aerobatic flight of 45 minutes duration. Concentration of plasmaprotein, albumine, total, ionized and calculated bound magnesium were measured. It turned out, that the bound fraction of circulating magnesium, calculated by subtraction of the ionized from the total magnesium correlates highly significantly with albumine concentrations during their fluctuations within the stress series without previous aerobatics. When stressful aerobatics of 45 minutes duration had to be absolved previously, the correlation was lost, due to a marked fall in bound magnesium levels, with a concomittant increase in the ionized fraction. We deduce that an important part of the calculable bound magnesium fraction in circulation is indeed protein bound. Since it correlates with the quick stress induced fluctuations of plasma albumine, it seems to be a much more sensitive parameter for magnesium alterations in stress than the more inert total fraction.
