- Abstract:
- Only 14 patients with severe anaphylactoid reactions induced by formaldehyde-containing dental antiseptics adn root canal fillings are reported to data. In all cases the onset of symptoms started a half or several hours after application of formaldehyde, and in no case there is a relapse or second event reported. Specific IgE against formaldehyde or formaldehyde-human serum albumin (F-HSA) conjugates were found in 8 patients, whereas 2 patients are reported with a positive scratch test and 4 patients with a positive patch test. These literature data suggest more an anaphylactoid rather than allergic mechanism underlying the clinical presentation. With regard to the widespread use of dental materials containing formaldehyde severe reactions are seldom reported and seem to have a very low incidence in the dental practice.
