Thrombolytic therapy of ischemic stroke

Abstract:: Thrombolytic therapy of ischemic stroke has the aim to restore perfusion and to save brain tissue. Systemic (intravenous) thrombolysis of the acute ischemic stroke with rt-PA has been shown to be effective and was approved as therapy in the USA and Canada according to the criteria of the NINDS Stroke Study. In Europe, approval is currently applied for in one country of the European Community. Meanwhile, selected patients may be treated by thrombolysis within 3 hours after the onset of ischemia according to the doctors' therapeutical privilege. Thrombolysis should be performed in specialized centers with proven experience and the contraindications to this therapy have strictly to be taken into account.
