Interactions of trace elements in osteoarthritic knee-joint effusions and in corresponding sera

- <(Aims, material and methods)under bar>: Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was applied to the determination of the concentrations of the 17 elements barium (Ba), beryllium (Be), calcium (Ca), cadmium (Cd), cesium (Cs), copper (Cu), lanthanum (La), lithium (Li), magnesium (Mg), molybdenum (Mo), lead (Pb), rubidium (Rb), antimony (Sb), tin (Sn), strontium (Sr), thallium (Tl). and zinc (Zn) in 39 samples of osteoarthritic knee-joint effusions and in their corresponding sera of 39 patients. Additionally, interactions and correlations of elemental concentrations in both compartments were established. <(Results)under bar>: Generally, knee-joint effusions have lower elemental concentrations than their corresponding sera. For the essential elements Ca, Cu. Mg, and Zn and for the non-essential and toxic elements Ba and La. this difference was highly significant (p < 0.0005). Strongly positive correlations between concentrations in effusions and sera for the essential elements Cu (correlation coefficient 0.85) and Mg (0.77), Sn (0.76), and Mo (0.69) and for the non-essential elements Li (0.99), Rb (0.88), Cs (0.80), and Sr (0.68) could be established. The two alkaline earth cations and essential elements Ca and Me. strongly interacted in sera (0.72). In effusions. the two alkali metal cations Cs and Rb were closely associated to each other (0.66). Interelement correlations between sera and knee-joint effusions revealed that serum Rb clearly corresponded to effusion Cs (0.70) and serum Cs to effusion Rb (0.57). <(Conclusion)under bar>: The clinical potential of the described interactions is presently not clear and needs to be elucidated considering more clinical laboratory parameters such as C-reactive protein, glucose, lactate, and pH. Patients should be monitored for serum Cu and Zn as the concentrations of these two essential elements are at or even below the low limit of the reference range for healthy adults.
