Abstract:: Gastric mucosal homeostasis requires rapid alarm of protective mechanisms in the face of pending injury. This article summarizes the evidence that spinal afferent neurons monitor insults to the gastric mucosa and activate local mechanisms of defense and repair through release of transmitter peptides from their endings in the stomach.
