- At the Department of Radiology of the University of Graz, a picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) is used in routine operation. The operation of the PACS is an essential part of the clinical routine. Failures which occur in one part of the system may spread out, and critically impair the routine work. To allow the operation of the PACS to be independent of the permanent presence of an EDP-expert, a rule-based expert system has been developed for trouble-shooting. This expert system makes use of standard techniques, and helps the PACS user, to eliminate problems and to guarantee smooth operation. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
