Significant Improvement in Coping with Physical Stress After Magnesium Supplementation During a Health Cure

Abstract:
In a placebo controlled investigation of 17 healthy probands (age between 24 and 51 years), the effects of a 10 days treatment with 400 mg Magnesium per day upon parameters of stresscompatibility were checked. Magnesium was supplemented by both local ''Long Life'' mineral water (200,5 mg/l, 1,51 per day) and Magnosolv (Asta Medica, 360 mg) every other day. Before and after the treatment a 7 minutes' cycle ergometry had to be performed which demanded about 70% of the workload. Before and after ergometry a blood gas analysis was performed, because it turned out in an experiment with fighter pilots containing 131 sampling points, that a significant correlation (p < 0.001) existed between stress induced rise in plasmanorepinephrine and bloodgas parameters as pO(2), HCO3, pH, baseexcess a.s.o. Moreover, white blood count was also measured at all sampling times to be able to estimate stress leucocytosis as a valid parameter for the individual impact of stress hormone elevation upon organs. It turned out, that blood gas alterations due to one and the same ergometric load were significantly less pronounced after the ten days of magnesium treatment than before, which correlates - as mentioned above - with norepinephrine elevations in a highly significant manner. Also stress leucocytosis was significantly diminished after magnesium treatment. Estimation of stress compatibility by standard provocation and blood gas parameters seems to depict quite satisfactorily the economization of the reaction to stress after magnesium treatment.
