Abstract:
Approximately 5-20% of pregnancies are complicated by hypertension. Preeclampsia (PE) is defined as the occurrence of hypertension, edema, and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation in previously normotensive women (ACOG). Although the pathophysiology of PE has been well documented, the etiology of this disease is still unknown. Proposed etiologies are: abnormal trophoblast invasion, vascular endothelial damage, immunologic phenomena, genetic predisposition, cardiovascular maladaptation as well as prostacyclin-thromboxane imbalance. More than 100 clinical, biochemical, and biophysical tests have been described to predict the development of PE. None of them is reliable as a screening test. Delivery of the fetus and placenta still remains the most effective therapy for PE.
