- Abstract:
- In a recent analysis of three randomized controlled trials, a significant benefit of vitamin D administration was found for people with prediabetes on the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. With a number needed to treat (NNT) of 30, vitamin D is not far behind other interventions such as profound lifestyle change (NNT = 7) or metformin (NNT = 14). In absolute terms, vitamin D supplementation achieved a risk reduction of 3.3%. In particular, patients with a body mass index (BMI) below 30 kg/m(2) and a low baseline vitamin D level seemed to benefit in particular. This is also emphasized by the Endocrine Society in its new clinical guidelines on vitamin D supplementation which are recommended for a wide range of people. In view of the increasing rates of insulin resistance/type 2 diabetes mellitus and the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, it is important to use this simple and inexpensive option.
