- Abstract:
- In Austria, meningococcal vaccines are recommended for different age groups, but only those against the ACWY serogroups in adolescence are reimbursed. As a consequence, vaccination coverage rates are stagnating - especially among children from low-income families. This corresponds to a social and economic inequality that represents a major burden for the families affected and their treating physicians. Based on an analysis of recent meningococcal epidemiology, vaccination recommendations, vaccination programs and socioeconomic aspects, hurdles for an expansion of the cost free meningococcal vaccination program are defined and measures are proposed that could ensure comprehensive vaccine mediated protection against invasive meningococcal disease (IME). The inclusion of all vaccines against meningococci in the cost free childhood vaccination program would most likely increase the vaccination coverage against this serious infectious disease and significantly facilitate the daily work of paediatricians and general practitioners with regard to the frequently necessary educational talks about vaccination.
