- Abstract:
- Intermediate uveitis is an inflammation that primarily affects the vitreous, but it might include additional inflammation of the retinal vasculature. Patients tend to be younger, although all age groups can be affected. Approximately 20% of uveitis cases in tertiary referral centers are intermediate uveitis. Most cases are idiopathic (60%), and only 1% are infectious. Overall, 11% of cases are associated with multiple sclerosis and 8% with sarcoidosis. Therapy includes steroids (systemic, parabulbar, intraocular) as first-line treatment, but due to the frequently persistent inflammation, steroid-sparing immunosuppression is frequently needed. Despite the often chronic course of intermediate uveitis, the prognosis is relatively good.
