- Abstract:
- We analysed the frequency and quality of preoperative colposcopy findings in patients with grade III cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Charts from 271 patients with CIN III who had been treated at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University of Graz, were reviewed. Preoperative colposcopy findings and cervical cytologies were recorded. In 200 of 271 patients (74%), the histologic diagnosis of CIN III was based on a colposcopically directed biopsy. Acetowhite epithelium/leukoplakia was found in 54% of patiens while a mosaic pattern and a punctuation pattern was found in 45.5% and 30.5%, respectively. Residents should become familiar with the most characteristic colposcopic features associated with premalignant lesions of the cervix. Colposcopically-directed biopsies of these findings improve the detection rate of CIN.
