- In recent years, SARS-CoV-2 has occupied the entire population worldwide. The youngest people were hit hard by the pandemic, especially because children are not yet able to correctly classify what is happening. Obligatory masks were no exception, as school children were not excluded. This research should at least address and clarify the question whether a mandatory mask has a negative effect on physiological processes in children and adolescents. Our results showed a significant increase in inspiratory and expiratory CO2 values when wearing an FFP2 or surgical mask. All other measured parameters were largely unaffected. Based on these results, we have concluded that the wearing of an FFP2 or surgical mask does not present a health disadvantage for children and adolescents.
