- Abstract:
- In 1961 the Confederation of European Specialists in Paediatrics (CESP) was founded as a professional association representing European pediatricians and other specialists in the field of pediatrics. In 2001 the CESP was renamed the European Academy of Paediatrics (EAP; ), in line with its vision and mission to be a "Society" of dedicated pediatric professionals, whose aim is to promote and maintain optimal standards of health and well-being of children and adolescents in all of Europe through education and research, and above all to advocate for the health and the rights of children throughout the European region, as the American Academy of Pediatrics does for children in the 50 United States. The EAP provides pediatricians and other child health professionals with a forum for the exchange of knowledge and ideas and for collaboration on research and clinical projects. It provides educational guidelines and training opportunities, including online courses, workshops, and annual international meetings where the EAP Congress and Mastercourse alternates with the meeting of the European Academy of Paediatric Societies (EAPS).Furthermore, the EAP is substantially involved in a considerable number of health-promoting initiatives, such as promoting immunization, testing high-risk medical devices (CORE-MD), supporting breastfeeding, and advocating policies that promote healthy lifestyles for children and families. The EAP, with headquarters in Brussels, represents the pediatric section of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS PS), is represented in the International Pediatric Association (IPA, ), and works closely with the European Confederation of Primary Care Paediatricians (ECPCP) as well as other European and international organizations addressing children's health and development, such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (International) Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF).Realizing that there is strength in unity and that pediatric societies would be much more powerful and likely to succeed in advocating for children when they work together, a major objective of the EAP is to bring together different pediatric societies to create a unified and powerful voice to advocate for the health and needs of children throughout Europe.
