Abstract:
Spinal development is a complex process which does justice to the principle "the form follows the function." The craniocervical junction in particular has a large number of possible variations-segmentation and assimilation disorders are again brought to mind here. Some of these variations are of high clinical relevance, but some are only discovered by chance. From the perspective of manual medicine, however, extensive knowledge of the possible variants and their potential functional significance, as well as the ability to interpret traditional and current imaging data, particularly in this area, should be given. Radiologists often see this in a different light, especially when it comes to the possible functional significance of variations. During observation and assessment of the developing spine in children, variations should be considered and, if necessary, further clarification initiated.
