Abstract:
Medicine, Diabetes, Pediatrics. Heated tobacco products are on the rise in Austria due to aggressive marketing of the tobacco industry. Tobacco is heated up to 350 degrees C without combustion. Although fewer toxic substances are emitted, a substantial health damage is evident. So far, the majority of publica-tions regarding heated tobacco products has been conducted or sponsored by the tobacco industry. This fact has to be considered whenever the evidence of heated tobacco products is reviewed. Harmful effects of the emitted substances are evident. Consumption of heated tobacco prod-ucts leads to immediate, negative effects on the cardiovascular and pulmonary system. It must be assumed that long-term effects of heated tobacco products are similar to conventional cigarettes. Like conventional cigarettes, addiction to heated tobacco products consists of physical nicotine dependency and conditioned behavior. Heated tobacco products often start smoking careers and seem to be attrac-tive for children and teenagers. Secondhand smoke is a harmful threat with few relevant differences to conventional cigarettes. This position paper of the Austrian Council on Smoking and Health is aimed to be a basis for decision-making for political, medical, and social stakeholders and is officially supported by the Sci-entific Societies listed above. J Kardiol 2022; 29 (7-8): 198-202.
