- Abstract:
- In recent years, new modified-release hydrocortisone formulations have been developed to better mimic the diurnal cortisol profile in the treatment of adrenal insufficiency. Plenadren (R), a dual-release hydrocortisone for Addison's disease, cannot mimic the early morning rise in cortisol, but has been associated with an improved quality of life and certain metabolic parameters. Chronocort (Efmody (R)), a modified-release hydrocortisone taken in a toothbrush regimen in the evening before going to bed and upon awakening, can provide a near-physiological cortisol profile and can be used in the treatment of congenital adrenal hyperplasia but not yet for Addison's disease.
