- Background If a latent squint (heterophoria) cannot be overcome by fusion, symptoms, such as intermittent double vision, glare sensitivity, ocular pain, headache, as well as changes in vision occur. Often, the underlying pathomechanism is unclear. In addition to various ophthalmologic and neurological diseases, which must be clarified, asthenopic complaints are also described in craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD). Material and methods This article presents three case reports with CMD and asthenopic complaints and a review of the relevant literature. Results Nervous system and functional pathways connect vision and dental occlusion. Many studies investigated the relationship between trigeminal and oculomotor systems and described changes of pupil size, convergence and ocular motility disorders. Dentists and ophthalmologists should be more aware of this correlation for a better diagnosis and treatment. Conclusion In the case of therapy-resistant asthenopic complaints further orthodontic evaluation could be considered.
