- Abstract:
- Ocular allergy (OA) and dry eye syndrome (DED) are two common entities, which often occur concomitantly and can cause each other. This article focusses on the associations between OA and DED regarding pathophysiology, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and shows that itch is not the cardinal symptom enabling us to distinguish between these two entitites. Furthermore, we provide an overview of hypersensitivitiy reactions of the ocular surface often presenting as DED, and of DED as ocular adverse event of systemic anti-allergic medication.
