- Abstract:
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequent endocrine dysfunction in women of reproductive age. When pregnant, these women are susceptible to perinatal complications. The most common complication is the development of gestational diabetes (GDM). Besides PCOS genetic predisposition, overweight, maternal age, and an unhealthy life-style play the most important role in the development. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for avoiding maternal and fetal complications. Increased physical activity and dietary modification are the primary treatment for GDM, pharmacotherapy is used when normoglycemia is not achieved. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding excess weight gain, and a prolonged lactation have a positive impact on long-term comorbidities and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
