- Abstract:
- Within the framework of nontraumatic resuscitation room management for the care of critically ill patients, acute disturbances of vital functions are quickly detected and treated. In the primary survey, the established ABCDE (airway, breathing, circulation, disability, and exposure) approach is used for the structured examination of all relevant vital signs, and life-threatening disorders are treated immediately. "D" problems are associated with relevant cognitive dysfunction or focal neurological deficit. A wide variety of pathologies can be the cause, but functional therapy (e.g., securing the airway, ventilation, stabilization of the circulation) and the search for reversible causes are usually the first step. A structured concept for the clarification of a vigilance disorder or a focal neurological deficit, taking into account the local conditions, should be established and trained in every emergency department.
