- Abstract:
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy in women of childbearing age. In recent years, there have been several breakthroughs in understanding the definition, pathogenesis, and therapy options of PCOS. This review provides a brief summary of new findings and explores potential treatment options based on recent literature. The symptoms PCOS are explicitly diverse over a broad range of penetrance. Most relevant clinical symptoms are hirsutism, oligo-/amenorrhea, infertility, insulin resistance, and obesity as well as eponymous polycystic ovaries. Since there are no causal therapies for the syndrome, symptomatic treatments should be coordinated with the patient and her needs. Treatment options are lifestyle interventions, metformin, hormonal contraceptives or ovulation inductors and surgery. In recent years, probiotics have emerged as a potential treatment option due to the links between gut microbiome, energy and hormone metabolism. Probiotics could impact these metabolic pathways and alleviate typical symptoms in PCOS.
