- Abstract:
- At the end of 2018 the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and the European Society for Paediatric Research (ESPR) together with the Chinese Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (CSPEN) revised and updated the 2005 recommendations for parenteral nutrition (PN) of premature infants, neonates, children and adolescents. The new guidelines contain a total of 14 chapters on fluid management, macronutrient and micronutrient needs as well as recommendations on practical execution, such as venous access, standardization of nutritional solutions and home PN. The aim of this article is to present the essential aspects of the comprehensive guidelines in a form suitable for practical application. The first part covers the recommendations for PN of term and preterm infants, the second part the recommendations for toddlers, children and adolescents and the third part describes general recommendations.
