- Abstract:
- Internationally, the incidence and prevalence of diabetes is rapidly rising. Diabetes-associated cardiovascular complications are also increasing worldwide. Initiation, progression, and complications of both diseases are essentially governed by immunologic and inflammatory mechanisms and, thus, are closely linked pathophysiologically. The current review article describes in detail the various diagnostic and therapeutic tools available to treat patients with diabetes suffering from coronary heart disease and cardiac arrhythmias. We particularly focus on the current consensus recommendations and guidelines and answer practical questions, e.g., regarding stratification of the cardiovascular risk of patients with diabetes, interventional vs. conventional surgery treatment for patients with coronary heart disease and diabetes, treatment of patients with diabetes and acute coronary syndrome, as well as the prevalence and incidence of atrial fibrillation in patients with diabetes.
