Abstract:
Liver cirrhosis is agrowing public health challenge worldwide. Gut microbiome composition is severely disturbed in cirrhosis. Strategies to modulate the gut microbiomesuch as antibiotics, probiotics, prebiotics or faecal transplantationare promising new tools to influence the microbiome. Probiotics have shown promising results in the treatment of complications of cirrhosis; however, high quality studies are necessary to explore the full potential and possible side effects of gut microbiome modulation in cirrhosis.
