- All recommendations for the care of healthy newborn infants are based on skin to skin contact and rooming in. The current guidelines emphasize the prevention of sudden unexpected postnatal collapse (SUPC) and falls, which are described in detail and demonstrated by a video. A healthy newborn should be resuscitated by room air, supplemental oxygen should be considered if the oxygen saturation remains below the target range. Clamping of the umbilical cord should be carried out at the earliest after 60 s after the delivery and has no disadvantages even with an intact umbilical cord. As risk situations cannot be predicted well-trained personnel (medical doctors, midwives) and technical equipment must be available at every delivery. The personnel should attend training courses for newborn resuscitation on a regular basis.
