Abstract:
Since 1983, the NPO "GROSSE SCHUTZEN KLEINE/Safe Kids Austria" has been working for the prevention of fatal, severe, and easily avoidable accidents involving children. "GROSSE SCHUTZEN KLEINE/Safe Kids Austria" cooperates closely with the Medical University of Graz/Department of Pediatric Surgery and several other hospitals, and is in lively exchange with international child safety networks. The NPO combines intensive research into accidents involving children research with the direct implementation of these results in different projects, lectures, publications, and in media relations. By means of the database "Styrian Injury Surveillance System" the Research Center for Childhood Accidents records, evaluates, and analyzes all accidents of the Styrian population - those involving children in particular detail. The main projects of the "GROSSE SCHUTZEN KLEINE/Safe Kids Austria" are the first Austrian children's safety house "BARENBURG" and the participation project "KinderSichere Bezirke/Child-Safe Communities". More than 30 years of work for child safety show that "Injury prevention pays off!" In 1983, a total of 198 children were killed in accidents in Austria. Until 2015, this figure could be reduced by 85% ( 24 fatal accidents involving children in 2015). The number of children who needed hospital care after an accident in Austria was about 270,000 in 1983. By 2015, this figure had decreased to 166,000. In addition to the technical achievements, legal regulations, and bettermedical care, the continuous knowledge transfer and raising awareness concerning injury prevention play an important role. However, there is still enough to do in Austria. Because every child matters!
