- Background. Thermal injuries, such as burns and scalding belong to the most common injuries in children in the domestic environment, leading to hospitalization despite numerous preventive measures. Severe burns remain a great challenge for the interdisciplinary burns team, despite the progress in pediatric intensive care. Objective. An overview of the surgical, conservative and intensive care treatment measures in the interdisciplinary setting of a burns unit for children. Material and methods. Presentation of contemporary practices on the basis of our own experiences and the available literature. Results and conclusion. Treatment of major burns in children remains a great challenge for all persons involved, from the first responders, the team of the burns unit and to the parents. This can only be ensured in an interdisciplinary environment of a special burns unit for children with the aim of reducing mortality and morbidity and to guarantee social reintegration.
